The Peace Education Committee of GPPAC is hosting a webinar on November 15th. This webinar will focus on the importance of peace education for sustainable peace and provide examples from Rwanda. This webinar will be given by the GPPAC member Aegis Trust.
The Aegis Trust has developed a successful model for peace education in Rwanda, supporting tens of thousands of young people across the country with the knowledge and skills to overcome the legacy of genocide.
Peace education started as a pilot in 2008 at Kigali Genocide Memorial. A participatory and interactive methodology, where participants learn by doing, is central to Aegis’ peace education programme. In 2013-16 the programme expanded to cover 22 districts, through the Aegis-led Rwanda Peace Education Programme (RPEP) and the Genocide Research and Reconciliation Programme (GRRP).
The three-year project ended with a big achievement: Peace and Values Education was infused in the Rwandan school curriculum. Teachers were trained and given the required printed teaching and learning materials (teacher guide and model lesson plans). To support the face to face work done with teachers, youth and the community at large, a digital platform dubbed “Ubumuntu Digital Platform” was created to take further Peace Education content and methodology in a more interactive and creative way.
